Doubt about adonis( ) on Beta diversity matrix

Good evening,

I have a little doubt about using function adonis( ) on R to apply a PERMANOVA on beta diversity matrix: it’s done to test if groups have a different beta diversity within themself or just to test if the groups are different?

For example: I have two patotype A and B… a significative result of adonis on beta diversity matrix would tell me that A is different from B? If it is so, then what’s the conceptual difference with making an adonis( ) directly with OTU/ASV abundance instead?
