Job Summary

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The UC Davis Genome Center is a campus-wide initiative integrating experimental and computational approaches to address key problems at the forefront of genomics. The Bioinformatics core provides expertise and infrastructure to carry out complex acquisition, curation and distribution of data sets, as well as, develop and perform computation, analyses and simulations addressing a wide variety of biological questions from genomics and systems biology. The services provided by the core are on a recharge basis to all campus researchers.

The Bioinformatics Core holds more than a dozen workshops and seminars per year that draw a local, national and international continuing education audience. Events vary from one-hour lunch-and-learn seminars to week-long bioinformatics workshops. Annual workshop revenue is $250K-300K.

This position will oversee coordinative aspects of projects and events, in close collaboration with the Bioinformatics Core Director and staff.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, serve as Project and Workshop Coordinator for the UC Davis Bioinformatics Core Facility. Responsible for providing a full range of support to the Core’s Director and Core’s staff of data analysts.

Manage the Core’s fee-based service projects including client communication and client requests, project timelines, project reports and billing procedures.

Oversee the coordination of Core outreach and training activities, planning event logistics, securing speakers, marketing and communications and maintenance of activity budgets.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Lift and move materials weighing approximately 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Some overtime required.
  • Some evening and weekend work as well as some overnight, off-site work/travel.
  • Vacation restrictions during weeks of planned events.
  • Must be routinely on-call and carry a cell phone.
  • May be asked to use own transportation to move supplies to event sites.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Experience in project management including professional communication and managing client expectations with an emphasis on quality, quantity and timeliness of work, and timeline oversight.
  • Experience collecting data, background information and materials from multiple and varying sources, and evaluate to make timely decisions.
  • Experience in budget management including billing, cost estimates, budget oversight and expense trends.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with administration staff, service core staff, vendors, visitors and volunteers, using tact, diplomacy, and good judgement during all interactions in the performance of a wide variety of programs and support functions.
  • Organizational skills to coordinate several simultaneous activities with strict deadlines and complex scheduling requirements.
  • Must be reliable and extremely detail oriented.
  • Skills to maintain and active website and active social media presence in order to market core activities.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in conference, course, and workshop planning, including event evaluation and participant registration is helpful.
  • Experience with the UCD Davis Core Billing system (currently PPMS).
