Position Description:
Every great life-changing discovery begins the same way-with new knowledge. It can change everything, from a single life to the future of entire communities. That’s why academic medicine, and the continuous pursuit of knowledge, is at the center of everything we do at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
In the role of Bioinformatics Analyst I working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine Center (GSPMC) is seeking an addition to their highly productive Bioinformatics and Data Analytics Unit that services internal and external clinical and research partners. Genomics is revolutionizing the medical practice through the expansive use of high-throughput sequencing tests. Further, GSPMC is pioneering team science and dedicated to advancing research in genomics and epigenomics. Bioinformatics is the key to turning data into actionable knowledge through processing clinical and research Service Line samples, developing new testing methodologies, and to improving interpretation of genetic variants.
The successful candidate would be cross-trained across our clinical and research production service lines, including Clinical WES/WGS, RRBS, and RNAseq, and would also contribute to the development of future service lines in areas of DNA, RNA, and epigenetic NGS. Therefore, prior experience in the analyses of a combination of NGS data types is required, and epigentic data types such as ATAC, ChIP, and mRNA-Seq is preferred. Experience in multi-omics integration and visualization is preferred.
This Bioinformatics Analyst would be expected to maintain current knowledge of the literature, upholding and proactively improving analysis methods for contributions to a wide variety of projects and publications.
1. |
Support and take lead on service lines that are not fully developed. |
2. |
Understands principles of NGS data, sequencing, and the interpretation of results. Independently provides troubleshooting for data generation and processing. Implements triaging and generates reports. |
3. |
Develops, implements, and refines bioinformatic workflows and tools for analyzing and visualizing data including relevant QA/QC metrics. |
4. |
Leads the analysis for a portfolio of projects including implementing methods development plans. Presents regular project updates at meetings with collaborators or clients. |
5. |
Adapts bioinformatics tools, visualization packages, and annotation resources for research projects to independently and accurately perform research analysis. This includes workflow automation. |
6. |
Maintains a professional level of knowledge of genetics and at least one focused topic related to the service lines that the candidate leads, to maintain state-of-the-art analyses and workflows. |
7. |
Works with database and system administrators to implement and optimize methods for data input, storage, retirival, and reporting for APIs and data access portals. |
8. |
Operates, and troubleshoots, and improves analytic tools; notifies Supervisor when complex problems occur. |
Preferred Schedule:
Position Requirements:
Minimum Education: |
Master’s degree |
Prior Experience: |
2 years or Thesis/Publications with direct relevance |
Preferred Field of Study |
Bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular genetics, Machine Learning/AI, or comparable field |
This position requires strong cross-disciplinary and analytical skills, working knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, and statistics, as well as experience using tools for NGS data processing. Working experience with gene expression and epigenetic sequence analysis and algorithms is required. The successful candidate will join a productive team of researchers in running, maintaining, improving, and developing more detailed bioinformatic workflows for processing diverse NGS data types, and integration across data types. To facilitate team communication and productivity, experience in using task tracking and code subversion systems is preferred; successful candidates will be trained on their use within our group. As the GSPMC is actively working to bring new technologies into the clinic, the successful candidate will receive training in on the established workflows and processes, with opportunities to improve the workflows, increase automation, and apply machine learning and statistical approaches to data integration and datamining.
The successful candidate will work closely with wet-lab scientists to translate the information gained from NGS datasets to the design and implementation of workflow analytic improvements, process improvements, and greater interpretability of the data. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to critically read, understand, and interpret scientific publications. Experience with Linux-based HPC clusters is preferred. The successful candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, capable of maintaining focus on the big-picture (why we are doing what we are doing), and an effective written and verbal communicator.
