If you have a specific problem to solve, random experts strangers on the internet will likely be able to help. I think that’s where this forum is most useful.
When it comes to big career questions such as the one you are asking, I am not sure you should rely on random strangers. People around you have much better idea about your abilities, background, available resources, timelines, etc. Not to mention that some of your local colleagues possibly control your funding and the duration of your stay in the program. They are likely to be more affected by your contributions to the lab, and I think they should be the ones you ask about these things.
