• Salary Package: from $107.404 to $119,510 p.a. (Level 8), plus 17% employer’s Superannuation.

THE ROLE
We are seeking an expert who is ready to join our team as Technology Manager – Bioinformatics. This role will lead the Bioinformatics team at the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF) at Macquarie University. Reporting to the APAF Manager you will:
- Contribute to the development and delivery of APAF’s strategy, taking a lead role within the specialist stream of Bioinformatics
- Work with clients and APAF staff to develop and implement optimal Bioinformatics solutions and analysis ensuring that they operate in a robust, accurate, cost effective and timely manner
- Manage and contribute expert advice for the day to day operations, projects, initiatives and resourcing for Bioinformatics, ensuring a highly professional and effective service is provided to clients, team members, users and stakeholders
- Maintain knowledge, expertise and currency in sector trends and developments within Bioinformatics, working with stakeholders and the team to incorporate best practice and build protocols, capability and services.
- Establish, implement, document and test informatics methods, tools and capabilities
- Carry out validation and verification of tools and analyses to be used in NATA-accredited testing.
- Manage, coach and develop a high performing team
- Contribute to business development and service improvement initiatives to grow and expand APAF bioinformatics capabilities
About Us
The Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF) is a NATA accredited facility that provides high throughput, quality, national and international proteomics and protein chemistry research services in both fee-for-service as well as collaborative models for both academic and industry clients. The Facility operates modern functional proteomics and protein chemistry instrumentation integrated with in-house and commercial bioinformatics toolkits. The Facility has a mixed portfolio of activity including contract analysis, collaborative applied and fundamental research, training, and technology development to industry, government and the research community.
APAF is part of the Macquarie Analytical and Fabrication Facility (MAFF) which sits within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University. MAFF includes a highly diverse range of analytical instrumentation and research facilities which include, in addition to APAF, Macquarie GeoAnalytical (MQGA), Microscopy Unit, Chemical Analysis unit and the Macquarie Engineering Technical Services (METS).

Essential
- Degree (preferably a postgraduate degree) in bioinformatics, information technology or data science, preferably with a deep understanding of systems biology, proteomics or protein analysis
- Proven work experience in bioinformatics, statistics and/or data science relevant to protein analysis and proteomic
- Proven work experience in the implementation and use of proteomic analysis tools and experience with high performance computing, including cloud-based, and cluster-based infrastructure
- Experience working with clients, scientists, and researchers to provide expert advice, develop analysis plans and bioinformatic/statistical solutions to complex analytical problems
- Proven experience working with experimental scientists to address specific research questions and/or develop and implement solutions for specific research aims
- Extensive practical experience in a Linux environment and in scripting languages, including python, R, and bash
- Ability to build and maintaining strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including experience in leading and developing individual and team performance
Desirable
- Demonstrated skills in data visualisation and/or development of visualisation tools
- Practical experience with developing and interpreting data algorithms for the analysis of large biological datasets, preferably proteomics related
- Proven ability to integrate data and develop statistical models from ‘omics data to predict biological outcomes such as disease state, severity, etc
