I thought I’d post my results since I don’t see a lot of South Asian results.
What I know about my ancestry:
-Sri Lankan Tamil from Eastern Province (3 grandparents)
-Indian Malayali & Sri Lankan Tamil (1 grandparent)
-The families of the 3 SL Tamil grandparents are from the same village. But the family moved into the main city/town before my grandparents generation. The families also converted to Catholicism before my grandparents generation.
-The Indian Malayali/SL Tamil grandparent’s side of the family, I don’t know too much about. The SL half is from the same district/region as my other SL Tamil grandparents. The Indian Malayali half were brought in by the Brits to work on the railway as far as I know.
My percentages may be skewed as my parents are first cousins (think “not having enough money for a dowry” and “arranged marriage” music more than banjo music).I was surprised and not surprised about the European ancestry.
I did the Geno 2.0 project a number of years ago and it showed no European ancestry. So I thought the 0.7% was noise. But even at 90% confidence level, I’m showing European at 0.5%. And I got a number of 4th Cousins in the DNA Relatives matches who are very clearly white. I’m thinking it is probably accurate as another 4th Cousin showing is someone I actually know. She’s from the same area as my family and her mom’s ancestry is also from the same village as my 3 SL Tamil grandparents.
Although it says “French & German”, mine is more likely to be Dutch. The area of SL my family is from has a group of people known as Burghers. They trace their family back to Portuguese and Dutch men who had relationships with native women.
I also included my Harappaworld results. I looked up some of the communities, and most of the high percentages trace to scheduled tribes or lower caste in Southern India/Kerala or Northeastern India. I don’t know anything about my caste as my family has been Catholic for at least 3/4 generations. Although my mom said we were possibly Vellallar.
My Geno 2.0 results were as follows:
75% South Asian
12% Southeast Asian and Oceania
12% Central Asian
Reference population is East Indian and North Indian.
Geno 2.0 mtDNA Haplogroup: M61a which originates in Southeast Asia/South China
The interesting thing is that 23andme shows my maternal haplogroup as M61.When I did research on M61a, there wasn’t much to find. It’s apparently found in a tribe in Northeastern India. Wikipedia says it’s found in southern China – in and around Tibet. I think the report said it originated about 1000 years ago. FamilyTreeDNA still shows my mtDNA as M61a.
M61 (according to 23andme) is extremely rare (1 in 170,000 who test with them). Originated about 5,500 years ago. Wikipedia says Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Borneo as references. One academic paper identified it as a novel haplogroup in Northeastern India. It was also identified in a excavation in the Euphrates Valley associated with Mesopotamia. Academic speculation is that this was from Indian merchants presence in the area.
Though it may seem odd, based on Sri Lankan and South Indian history, it’s actually quite logical.
If anyone has any other insights, I would be interested to hear.
