Job description Research Assistant in Genomics / Bioinformatics Nutrition Technologies

Nutrition Technologies is an innovative company producing insects as a sustainable protein source for the animal feed industry. We use biotechnology methods in the rearing and breeding of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens). Our primary product is an insect protein meal which can replace fishmeal in aquaculture feed and in doing so decrease the overfishing pressure and climate effects of those traditional feed sources. Nutrition Technologies has a commercial scale production facility in Johor Bahru Malaysia and is headquartered in Singapore where we are growing our R&D capabilities. The company is anticipating strong growth and rapid expansion over the next 12 months, and there is significant opportunity for development within the business.

You will be joining a new research team in an exciting new field at the intersection of Biotechnology and Insect rearing. The first phase of work will involve desk-research on projects relating to insect breeding and genetics. This will eventually begin to incorporate a growing lab based research component, as we commission our laboratory in Singapore.

Note: This position will work from home until conditions allow for in-person work.

The Research Assistant roles and responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing the genomics data to obtain insights across several focus areas

  • Helping to create technology roadmaps for 2-3 projects relating to selective breeding and insect genomics

  • Collaborating research scientists from other teams by contributing genomics/ genetics expertise

  • Conducting literature reviews and summarizing information in concise reports and presentations

  • Assist in an Black Soldier Fly selective breeding program (involvement depends on interest & expertise)

  • A BSc or Diploma in a life science field, preference for those with a degree in Genomics or Genetics. Or equivalent experience

  • Previous research experience in the field of genomics / genetics or selective breeding

  • Working knowledge on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and BLAST

  • Knowledge and skills for routine molecular biology techniques

  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills

  • Understanding of the usage and interpretation of statistical methods

  • Strong desire to improve existing skills and learn new ones

  • A creative thinker with excellent critical thinking skills

  • Mission aligned: passion for innovation & sustainability

  • Previous relevant research experience with Drosophila melanogaster

  • Knowledge of standard bioinformatics file format

  • s (FASTQ, BAM, VCF…), tools (samtools, bcftools, IGV…) and data repositories (Ensembl, gnomAD…)

  • Working knowledge of SQL, R and/or python
