UPDATE — Taunton Police Chief Edward Walsh reports that the 12-year-old boy is now conscious and alert.
TAUNTON — Taunton Police are investigating after a 12-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was struck by car on Friday night.
Police said officers and the Taunton Fire Department responded to Plain Street at about 6:30 p.m. on Friday for a reported car crash involving a pedestrian.
They arrived to find the boy suffering from serious injuries.
He was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence.
According to police, an initial investigation shows the boy was crossing the street with a family member when he slipped and fell back into the path of an oncoming car.
The driver of the car, a 2006 Nissan Sentra traveling westbound, stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.
Police said the crash remains under investigation.
No charges have been filed, and speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
