Job description:

DESY looks back on a long tradition in synchrotron radiation experiments in a wide range of applications and has developed into one of the leading international centers in this field. For high-end synchrotron radiation applications, the 3rd generation source PETRA III is available since 2009 as one of the most brilliant X-ray sources worldwide. The Swedish Materials Science beamline P21 at PETRA III is dediated to material characterization with multi-modal methodology using high energy X-ray diffraction and scattering methods. High energy X-rays exhibit high penetration into the sample and allow for complex sample environments and therefore have great potential for industrial applications.

  • Support of external user groups and customers from industry, in particular from Sweden, during the experiment at P21 and during data analysis
  • Develop and implement new services for users of P21, in particular for users from industry
  • Develop and conduct a scientific project in the area of materials characterization using high energy synchrotron radiation
  • The project should have relevance for industrial applications

  • PhD in materials science, engineering science, physics or equivalent qualification
  • Experience with characterization of materials with high energy synchrotron radiation
  • Knowledge in the mechanical properties of materials, in particular metals
  • Practice in conducting experiments at synchrotron radiation sources
  • Interested to work in applied and industry relevant science
  • Programming skills, e.g. Python & experience to analyze large data sets
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and excellent knowledge of English
