PJSC Sberbank : Sber holds a session on the future of basic and applied sciences on Congress of Young Scientists

At the Congress of Young Scientists, Sber has held a session called “The Scientific Breakthroughs We are About to See in the Next Decade: Life Science, Physical World, a Digital Universe” with a round table that addressed the prospects for the key fields of basic and applied sciences. The discussion was moderated by Albert Yefimov, vice president, director of Research and Innovations, Sberbank.

The discussion was attended by Olga Dontsova, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of Physicochemical Biology of the Department of Biological Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Department of Chemistry of Natural Compounds with the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU); Alexander Kuleshov, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Skoltech President; Alexei Khokhlov, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, vice president, Head of the Department of Physics of Polymers and Crystals, Faculty of Physics, Lomonosov Moscow State University; Dmitry Zemtsov, vice rector, HSE University; and Dmitry Zubtsov, Head of the Technology and Data Academy, the Sberbank Corporate University.

According to Olga Dontsova, scientific breakthroughs in biochemistry happen all the time. She cited the creation of the CRISPR / Cas9 genome editing method, which was discovered last year, and noted that today health and longevity are clearly the main trend in biological sciences.

Alexander Kuleshov shared his insights about the future of digital technology and the prospects of the “digital universe”. He noted that this field usually sees incremental movement instead of breakthroughs. In his opinion, the primordial world, the natural world, is digital, not analog. And we only recently began to realize that everything can be digitized, sent, and we can really create digital universes.

Alexei Khokhlov said that a fundamental breakthrough in physics and chemistry took place a hundred years ago, and nothing like the importance of the creation of quantum mechanics in the next decade should be expected in these sciences. Still, he believes that the accumulated knowledge in physics and chemistry today is enough to solve the urgent problems facing humanity. Big discoveries are expected exactly in these fields. This primarily concerns alternative energy sources, such as hydrogen fuel cells.

Albert Yefimov, PhD, vice president, director of Research and Innovations, Sberbank:

“In a fast-paced race of companies and countries for technological excellence, properly prioritized research priorities are critical. The winners in this competition get everything – to refuse to participate in the scientific race means to abandon priorities on a national scale. A major technology company, Sber has a comprehensive approach to the development of fundamental research, training young and talented people together with universities and research centers, exchanging data with the country’s scientific community, holding industry conferences, and also actively popularizing science.”

The Congress of Young Scientists and the closing ceremony of the Year of Science and Technology will be organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the Coordinating Council for Youth Affairs in Science and Education of the Council for Science and Education under the President of the Russian Federation, and the Roscongress Foundation. The operator of the Year of Science and Technology in the Russian Federation is ANO National Priorities. In the Year of Science and Technology, Sber was the curator of the thematic month “November, which was dedicated to artificial intelligence.
