The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

Advancing digitalization and the resulting accelerated technological development bring new challenges for quality assurance. Due to the digital transformation, products as well as production and economic processes are changing massively and with increasing speed. The quality infrastructure (QI) must therefore be overworked and digitally transformed. The digitization of QI and the creation of solutions for quality assurance of digital products and processes requires infrastructural developments, including modern, uniform data structures and the implementation of server- and cloud-based solutions for the digital processes based on them with corresponding interfaces.

Within the QI-Digital project (, a prototype for the digital quality infrastructure will be developed. In this context, research data from the field of additive manufacturing (3D printing) will be collected in a central data management platform (openBIS) and transferred to secure data structures. Methods of modern data management for the quality infrastructure are to be tested and implemented in conjunction with the use of distributed ledger (blockchain) technologies. The goal is to develop an interoperable digital quality infrastructure in collaboration with additional partners. Interoperability in terms of QI data structures and interfaces for the use cases as well as processes will be ensured via suitable metadata formats or ontologies.

You will be part of an interdisciplinary environment that offers diverse opportunities to work in a future-oriented way at the interface of computer science and information technology with materials science and analytical research.

Your responsibilities include:

  • You will develop new concepts and models of data science and research data management in the field of additive manufacturing.
  • You will develop and implement methods for a digital quality infrastructure in the field of additive manufacturing
  • In a team of data scientists, you will design the implementation of a central data platform together with engineering scientists with the goal of uniform data structures
  • You will support the further development of modules of the data platform and their evaluation with your expertise
  • You will develop digital processes and interfaces for the data management of the digital quality infrastructure.
  • You define standards for data exchange between central data management and the distributed ledger (blockchain) application
  • You develop solutions for mapping standards and certificates through metadata and ontologies

Your qualifications:

  • Completed scientific university studies (diploma, master’s degree) in a subject relevant to the job (business informatics, computer science, technical software development, bioinformatics, engineering, mathematics, physics, data engineering) or a comparable field of study
  • Very good knowledge in the field of data science and/or (research) data management
  • Good knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java, C++)
  • Experience in conceptual design of database schemas (SQL and/or NOSQL databases) and/or backend development of databases
  • Experience in the implementation of data structures for research in the field of engineering or additive manufacturing is desirable
  • Knowledge of research data management methods/platforms (e.g., openBIS or similar frameworks) is desirable.
  • Ideally, knowledge of digital research data and processes and related tools such as electronic lab books, Git, data archiving
  • Good, precise and addressee-appropriate oral and written language skills/expression skills in German and English
  • Good communication and Information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, willingness and ability to make decisions, ability to work in a Team and willingness to cooperate as well as willingness to learn
