2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6, aero-friendly EV revealed

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan has finally been revealed in full after a long-running teaser campaign. is it the Korean marque’s Tesla Model 3 alternative?

This second model in the new Hyundai Ioniq family, after the far more angular Ioniq 5 crossover-hatch, places aerodynamic efficiency at its very heart, thereby maximising range.

Inspired by the 2020 Hyundai Prophecy EV Concept, the Ioniq 6 also takes a leaf from Mercedes-Benz – particularly the similarly radical EQE and EQS electric sedans.

The silhouette, low nose, active front air flaps, wheel gap reducers and slim digital (camera-based) side mirrors all play their part; as do the rear winglet, boat tail, specialised bumper separation traps and flat underbody covering.

The end result is a drag coefficient of just 0.21. Cars don’t get much slipperier through the air than that, the 0.20Cd EQS notwithstanding.

There are also the signature Ioniq Parametric Pixel lights – more than 700, no less – for the headlights, rear wing, and rear light bar among other aspects.

“IONIQ 6 connects an emotional convergence of functionality with aesthetics,” said Hyundai Design Centre head SangYup Lee. “The distinctive streamlined design is the result of close cooperation between engineers and designers.”

It’s based on a version of the E-GMP 800V-capable all-electric modular platform used beneath the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60. This means a totally flat floor and spacious-feeling interior.

In time this platform will also underpin the Ioniq 7 SUV previewed here.

Inside the Ioniq 6 are side-by-side 12-inch screens for instruments and centre displays, and 64 ambient light signatures to cycle through.

Hyundai designers also removed buttons from the doors to simplify the design, while transparent accents on the crash pad garnish, door map pocket and the console’s lower cover are said to accentuate the sense of spaciousness.

Designers also chose sustainable materials like eco-process leather or recycled PET fabric seats, a bio TPO skin dash, bio PET fabric headliner, paint derived from vegetable oils, and carpet made with recycled fishing nets.

The Ioniq 6’s world premiere will take place in July, when Hyundai will reveal the full specifications, including the “electrified streamliner’s” features and tech specs. We’ll also learn Australian launch timing.

That said, rumoured specifications for the Ioniq 6 were obtained by The Korean Car Blog in February 2022. The Ioniq 6 will reportedly offer up to 230kW of power and 515km of range, using a 77kWh lithium-ion battery.

The Ioniq 6 will reportedly measure 4855mm long, 1495mm tall, 1880mm wide, and have a 2950mm wheelbase.

By 2030, Hyundai aims to boost annual global BEV sales to 1.87 million units and secure a 7 percent level of global market share.
