Your responsibilities

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most frequent motoneuron disease with a devastating prognosis. Even today, it takes on average 12 months from the onset of motor symptoms to establish the diagnosis of ALS and approximately half of the patients are initially misdiagnosed. Furthermore, the loss of motoneurons precedes symptom onset by months (premotor stage). The Postdoctoral Fellow will develop a clinico-molecular fingerprint of premotor gene mutation carriers that will shed light on its molecular pathogenesis and allow for a timelier diagnosis. The Postdoc will be part of a project funded by the EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND).

Aim of the project involves:

  • Leveraging biostatistical and machine learning methods to derive a clinico-molecular fingerprint.
  • Bioinformatics analyses of medical records and deep molecular characterisation, i.e. proteomics and next generation sequencing data.
  • Develop systems biology approaches to gain insights in the complex disease aetiology of ALS.

Your qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Biophysics or equivalent with interest in neurodegenerative diseases and early drug development. Alternatively, a Ph.D. in Biotechnology, Biology or equivalent with significant experience and interest in Bioinformatics / Biostatistics.
  • Excellent knowledge of either machine learning or biostatistics.
  • Deep understanding of one neurodegenerative disease, preferably ALS or PD.
  • Extensive programming skills in R or Python.
  • Advanced knowledge of bioinformatics tools to process and analyse multi-OMICs datasets, in particular NGS (DNA and RNA) and proteomics.
  • Strong academic record.
  • Scientific curiosity, commitment to scientific excellence and ability to work independently.
  • Leadership skills and enthusiasm to co-supervise PhD students.
  • Highly motivated to work in an innovative and multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment including academic and industrial partners.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including experience in communicating across discipline boundaries.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

  • Pharmaceutical industrial experience
  • Proven record of receiving competitive fellowships
  • Good software engineering skills
  • Working in a Linux environment, with experience of shell scripting, cluster or cloud computing
