Unsure how to run FastQC on interactive node : bioinformatics

Hi all. My goal has long been to get involved in biology-problems — especially in the biomedical realm, but I haven’t had a direct path to doing so because I don’t love “doing” biology itself. For instance, I did a BS and MS in applied math with a healthy dose of physics, some comp sci, etcetera and through that I did some biophysics research, but in terms of interest/experience I am much more geared to that math/compute skill set.

Well, it looks like either biostatistics or bioinformatics is the best way for me to get re-involved outside of school/academia and the former appears to have harder educational requirements. Moreover, I have now done a couple years of software development in C++ and I have done smaller projects using python, SQL, a little Java, and I’ve toyed around with R. It seems like that might set me up pretty well for the informatics side of things.

Aside from the obvious of applying to bioinformatics roles, how does one make this transition? Should I focus on learning the biology (esp. genetics) so that I know the application area? Or maybe there are open-source projects I could at a minimum read if not try to contribute to? I’ve done a fair bit of statistics self study. Is that relevant, or only to the biostat jobs?

Thank you in advance for any advice.
