Bioinformatics Training Project Manager at European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

About the team/job

Are you passionate about computational training in life sciences and wish to focus your career on the management and coordination of training programs? We are looking for a team member who will coordinate a new multi-organization project (BioNT) funded by the European Commission, embedded in the Data Science Centre, alongside Bio-IT, and in synergy with EMBL’s long-term scientific and outreach programme.

The Data Science Centre was launched in February 2022 to promote cutting-edge research and services in Data Science across all of EMBL and will ensure that biological research data at our multi-site organisation are expertly processed, integrated, annotated, and openly managed to support and foster EMBL’s missions.

Within EMBL, Bio-IT supports the growing number of computational biology researchers and bioinformaticians at the institute and beyond. Bio-IT created an extensive programme of internal and external training, established internal platforms and resources, organised occasional events and meeting series. Bio-IT acts and grows in synergy with external and pan-european initiatives, such as ELIXIR, with national ones, such as de.NBI, and with the EMBL’s Data Sciences programme.

Bio-IT and the Data Sciences Centre, leading a consortium of other 9 partners from four different countries, will start the BioNT (Bio Network for Training) project next year. The BioNT project aims at increasing computational literacy and capacity by providing short training courses to a diverse audience, from job-seekers to managers of companies, active in biotechnology, bio-data and software development across the Life Sciences. The initiative will provide a unique opportunity for interaction between academic and industrial stakeholders, in particular with excellent training providers from both sectors. The project structure is inspired by The Carpentries and close interactions are anticipated.

Your role

The successful candidate will work as part of the Bio-IT Project and Data Science Centre and with stakeholders across the BioNT consortium (with partners in Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Norway), to develop the project strategy, manage monitoring and communication, coordinate and support new and existing activities, and encourage and empower community members to get involved in the project. This will entail identifying training needs and developing material and resources appropriate to dynamic communities working at the cutting edge of Life Science research and development.

This is a highly collaborative role that provides diverse opportunities to engage with and support the scientific community while developing your own leadership skills. The role includes significant scope for working independently and growing professionally as it provides the successful candidate with opportunities to shape the strategy and direction of the project according to their interests in accordance with the needs of the community.

Your tasks include:

  • Organising computational training courses/workshops/study groups; developing collaboratively high quality training materials;
  • Communicating technical concepts to a non-technical audience;
  • Scientific and industrial communities engagement and project management;
  • Awareness of latest developments in computational research and data science;
  • Designing or maintaining websites e.g. WordPress, GitHub/GitLab Pages;
  • Social media management, blogging.

You have

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related fields;
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills (English);
  • Sensitivity to stakeholders needs and enthusiastic team-working spirit;
  • Willingness to lead consortium projects;
  • Keen interest, experience and/or formal qualifications in teaching computational research skills (e.g. Carpentries and/or RStudio instructor certification);
  • Working knowledge of programming/scripting languages such as Python, R, Bash and of scientific computing concepts such as version control, cluster computing, workflow management, etc.. Technical knowledge of statistical inference or machine learning will be considered advantageous;

You might also have

  • Desire to work with the Bio-IT and Data Sciences Centre to connect people with similar interests and goals;
  • Interest in learning from other research communities of practice.

Why join us

EMBL is Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with approx. 2 000 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg, Barcelona, Hinxton, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment.
