Research Investigator – Dr. Karras’s Lab (Bioinformatics & Genetics) job with University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

The Genetics Department is a basic science department located in the George and Cynthia Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building at the world-renowned University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. The focus is on advancing knowledge of the molecular genetic mechanisms that regulate normal and abnormal cellular processes.

Cancer cells accumulate detrimental genetic mutations that perturb the function of important proteins they express. The Karras Laboratory investigates how protein-folding chaperones (a specialized suite of proteins that help mutant proteins to fold and function within cells) influence the accumulation and phenotypic manifestations of cancer mutations. This work aims to identify new targeting strategies for precision cancer medicine.

The Karras Laboratory:

The Research Investigator applies knowledge, technical expertise and experience to plan, coordinate, design, and carry out research projects. The ideal candidate will have experience with NGS (next gen sequencing) analysis using Illumina and genome assembly. Experience with genome annotation and generating gene deletion strains with yeast genetics preferred, but not required.


  • Functions in a separate and independent manner in the design and initiation of computational biology research projects related to genotype-to-phenotype mapping.
  • Organizes, coordinates, and participates in scientific research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • Implements published bioinformatic scripts and develops new scripts in Python and R.
  • Efficiently performs bioinformatic analyses of next-generation DNA and RNA sequencing data to infer expression, gene copy number variation and performs de novo genome assembly.
  • Interacts with bioinformaticians to implement and troubleshoot scripts on the computer cluster.
  • Functions, under supervision, in the design and initiation of molecular biology experiments, including PCR, genomic DNA and RNA purification, sample quality assessment and quantitation by Qubit.
  • Compiles, writes, and submits project reports.
  • Participate in assisting the P.I. in grant and manuscript preparation.
  • Assists in training, supervision, and research work activity for assigned laboratory and research personnel.
  • Reads literature and confers with superiors regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required: Bachelor’s degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Preferred: Master’s degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.


Required: Five years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, three years of required experience.
