New Google Cloud Products Target Telecom Provider Digital Transformation

Google Cloud has introduced three products – Telecom Network Automation, Telecom Data Fabric and Telecom Subscriber Insights – that aim to help communications service providers digitize their networks and increase revenues.

Google Cloud also said that it is updating its Google Distributed Cloud Edge to extend the infrastructure to the furthest point of the service provider’s radio access network (RAN).

Telecom Network Automation is designed to accelerate network and edge deployments using cloud-native automation tools based on Kubernetes. It relies upon managing a cloud-based version of Nephio, which is an open-source initiative started last year by Google Cloud and The Linux Foundation. Telecom Network Automation aims to quicken time to market, buttress vendor interoperability, reduce error-prone configurations and lower operational costs, Google Cloud says.

Telecom Data Fabric helps providers use the data they generate. It simplifies data collection, normalization and correlation through an adapter framework. The goal is to meet providers’ needs for data governance and sovereignty. The platform also teams with Vertex AI and ML analytics applications that support cross-domain network operations, energy efficiency, subscriber experiences and monetization, Google Cloud says.

Telecom Subscriber Insights uses AI to extract insights using providers’ data sources in a privacy-safe manner. The platform ingests and analyzes data with AI models to make recommendations and providers engage with subscribers across their channels.

All three products are in private preview globally.

“To succeed in a connected world, communication service providers are under enormous pressure to build and manage next-generation networks against rising capital and operational expenses,” Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said in a press release. “By applying cloud-native principles to network architectures, and accelerating subscriber growth through a holistic data management source, [providers] have the opportunity to bridge the gap between connectivity of today and connectivity of the future.”

In July 2021, Bell Canada and Google Cloud formed a partnership to use the cloud to update and upgrade the carrier’s infrastructure. Steps included shifting critical workloads to the cloud; deploying multi-cloud technology, AI, data, analytics and taking steps toward sustainability.
