Job Application for Bioinformatics Co-op, Empress Therapeutics at Flagship Pioneering, Inc.

Who are we?

Flagship Pioneering has conceived of and created companies such as Moderna Therapeutics (NASDAQ: MRNA), Editas Medicine (NASDAQ: EDIT), Omega Therapeutics (NASDAQ: OMGA), Seres Therapeutics (NASDAQ: MCRB), and Indigo Agriculture. Since its launch in 2000, Flagship has applied its unique hypothesis-driven innovation process to originate and foster more than 100 scientific ventures. In 2021, Flagship Pioneering was ranked 12th globally on Fortune’s “Change the World” list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies.

Founded by Flagship Pioneering in 2018, Empress Therapeutics pioneers a new paradigm for small molecule drug discovery based on an untapped source of novel, drug-like molecules already inside the human body. Our proprietary bioplatform leverages the power of evolution, human molecular and genetic data, and artificial intelligence to discover advanced starting points for drugs.  Our approach has the potential to create valuable, easy-to-take, safe, cost-effective medicines to treat a wide range of serious unmet medical needs in a fraction of the time and cost and with a higher probability of success than previously thought possible.

We are seeking a creative and innovative co-op to contribute to construction of our computational biology platform. The Computational Discovery team at Empress Therapeutics develops novel approaches for discovering small molecule therapeutics from omics-scale biological data. In this role, you will help us shape the platform that enables these discoveries by identifying and implementing emerging methods in bioinformatics. You will work closely with a mentor on the Computational Discovery team to survey the literature, generate hypotheses, design pilot experiments, and build and test genomic and metagenomic workflows. In addition, you will interface with members of the Drug Discovery and Biology teams and iterate based on feedback. You will have broad exposure to a fast-paced, entrepreneurial start-up environment and gain first-hand experience in translating computational biology research to the discovery of novel therapeutics.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and apply novel bioinformatic methods to assemble, annotate, and mine pathways from genomic, metagenomic, and other complex multi-dimensional data.
  • Contribute creatively and strategically to the company’s research, helping derive actionable biological hypotheses from the data.
  • Identify emerging methods and tools in computational approaches to multi-omic data analysis and lead prototyping and implementation when applicable.
  • Lead and collaborate closely with other scientists and research associates.
  • Report results to scientific team and management.

 KEY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate student in Biology, Computer Science, Bionformatics, Genomics, or related discipline.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, Unix/Linux OS, and command line environments.
  • Knowledge of applied statistics including machine learning.
  • Demonstrated research experience in genomics and bioinformatics (microbial genomics, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and/or metabolomics is a plus).
  • Familiarity with AWS, GCP, or similar cloud-computing services is a plus.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, capable of conveying technical information in a clear and thorough manner.
  • Ability to work with highly skilled teams in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial and technical setting.

Flagship Pioneering and our ecosystem companies are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status.
