Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard hiring Senior Software Engineer, Bioinformatics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States

Job DescriptionThe Cancer Data Science (CDS) team at the Broad (www.cancerdatascience.org/) is an interdisciplinary group dedicated to accelerating cancer research. We help design and analyze large-scale experiments, develop new statistical tools and machine learning methods, write papers, produce datasets used by tens of thousands of researchers around the world, and guide research and development for applying new technologies to cancer research. The success of cancer precision medicine requires determining optimal treatments given the detailed genomic and molecular information encoded in each patient’s tumor. CDS aims at accelerating precision cancer medicine by creating computational software (such as Chronos) and interactive exploratory tools (such as the DepMap portal) to help researchers understand the mechanisms of genetic and chemical vulnerabilities across all human cancers. To achieve this, CDS collaborates with multiple groups and research labs (e.g., DepMap, PRISM, CCLF, Sellers Lab, Getz lab etc) to assemble the most detailed and comprehensive characterization of the genomic and molecular features of preclinical cancer models. To help propel CDS’s projects into their exciting next phases, we are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to lead the bioinformatics engineering efforts of the Cancer Data Science team. This individual will help to create a world-class suite of data analysis pipelines. This opportunity will provide a high level of scientific exposure for the candidate within and beyond the Broad community, including the opportunity to work closely with a diverse team of computational biologists, clinical oncologists, experimental scientists, and scientific leaders both within the Broad and within industry.ResponsibilitiesAs part of the Cancer Data Science group within the Broad Institute’s Cancer Program, theCandidate Will

  • Define and implement a strategy for creating a robust data analytics infrastructure across Cancer Data Science.
  • Build autonomous and reproducible pipelines for multi-modal high-dimensional data analysis (including WGS, RNA-Seq, epigenomics, proteomics, paralogs combinatorial CRISPR screening, etc.)
  • Work closely with computational scientists to productionalize new data analysis methods and workflows.
  • Build and manage workflows to support the generation of processed data for release.

Requirements

  • A BS or MS in computer science, computational biology or related quantitative field or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of bioinformatics engineering experience in an academic or industry setting.
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Experience with cloud genomics platforms and cancer genomics strongly preferred
  • Fluency in software engineering best practices
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring junior team members is a plus.
  • The applicant must also demonstrate outstanding personal initiative and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
