Clinical partners include Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, Newark’s University Hospital in Newark, and other affiliates.Through this community of healers, scientists, and scholars, Rutgers is equipped as never before to transform lives.Rutgers RBHS is an anchor institution that boasts locations in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise.Posting SummaryRutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Informatics Specialist (Bioinformatics) for the Office of Research within the New Jersey Medical School.The primary purpose of the Informatics Specialist at Molecular and Genomics Informatics Core Facility is to execute workflows on high throughput genomics data including (but not limited to) WGS , RNA -seq, scRNA-seq, ATAC seq, and amplicon sequencing. This will entail being up to date on the best-in-class tools, as well as upcoming trends in the bioinformatics space. Candidates with a background in biology will be expected to interface with investigators regularly to align projects with their biological questions, whereas candidates with a background in computer sciences will be expected to perform pipeline development and optimizations. Over time or based on initial experience, candidates will be expected to perform both aspects.Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Utilize existing tools and internal pipelines to perform NGS analysis under the directive of the core and collaboration with various investigators.
  • Evaluate, test, and potentially implement various software packages.
  • Develop and expand internal pipelines for analysis of NGS and other informatics datasets for the core.
  • Write custom scripts to handle various NGS and other informatics datasets within the core.
  • Assist in data management in collaboration with the Genomics Center.
  • Attend seminars and lectures to remain current on the cutting edge of research paths of collaborating investigators.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, or computer sciences with record of experience, handling NGS , data sets.

  • Ability to effectively communicate technical and biological information in written and oral venues.
  • Basic knowledge in Python, R, or Bash.
  • Basic knowledge in Linux/Unix Systems.
  • Basic knowledge in NGS data generation by Illumina and ONT .
  • Familiarity with NGS data and various bioinformatics tools (alignment, assembly, variant calling etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of NGS wet lab operations for Illumina and/or ONT , or record of computer science background.
  • Basic project management skills.
  • Experience with Proteomics/Metabolomics data sets.
  • Experience with HPC settings and/or Cloud computing.
