About the opportunity

The Save Sight Institute (SSI) is a Centre of The University of Sydney, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health, located on the campus of Sydney Eye Hospital in Macquarie Street, Sydney. It was established in 1985 and has grown to be one of the top three ophthalmic research institutes in Australia, is internationally recognised as a centre of innovative research into ophthalmology and as a centre of excellence for clinical research, learning and teaching.

Ophthalmology is a highly specialised area of clinical medicine and science, and the Save Sight Institute has gathered together a critical mass of clinicians, researchers, equipment and technology which is unique within the University of Sydney. The Research Fellow will focus on project related to aging lifestyle interventions including exercise and diet modification to protect the optic nerve in rodent models.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • contribute to ongoing research that is investigating the detection of sick retinal ganglion cells in experimental glaucoma models (rodent) and human glaucoma
  • to build a portfolio of independent research within the scope and guidance of the Crowston team
  • to contribute to the generation and analysis of hyperspectral imaging data
  • to contribute to building data analytics, programming and bioinformatics capacity within the Crowston team
  • to help build research collaborations with which will ultimately result in knowledge or technology transfer leading to commercialization, improved policy or practice and/or enhancements to industry
  • to assist and where appropriate lead future grant applications and supervision of PhD students.

About you

  • have a medical degree and experience with clinical practice and clinical research techniques. in an academic field relevant to the discipline
  • demonstrates expertise and experience in undertaking laboratory research, in particular rodent and tissue culture-based models.
  • have established experience with stem cell culture techniques and neuronal differentiation
  • have broad expertise in data analytics, programming and bioinformatic analysis techniques
  • demonstrate a track record of research experience in leading research institutions
  • have the capacity to provide excellent mentorship for students and junior scientists
  • demonstrates a strong track record of effectively working in multi-disciplinary teams, industry and professional institutions, health partners, and stakeholders.
